Music & Liturgy

Cantors

   These ministers have both strong musical and leadership skills. They lead the congregational singing at all weekend Masses and proclaim the Responsorial Psalm. Cantors must be comfortable learning new repertoire on occasion. Cantor workshops are held bi-annually, and cantors are scheduled approximately once per month. An audition with Derrick is required.

Mixed Choir

   This group of approximately 20 men and women sings a variety of repertory, ranging from traditional to modern. Their main goal is to lead the congregational singing, although they occasionally learn pieces to perform as a choir, especially for major feast days. The mixed choir sings approximately 3 times per month and alternates between the different Masses at both St. Augustine and Sacred Heart. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 6:15-7:15. A love of singing and a desire to learn is a necessity. An audition with Derrick is required to determine voice part.

Men’s Choir

   This group of approximately 8-10 men leads the congregational singing twice per month. They alternate between the 5:45 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. liturgies at Sacred Heart. They rehearse 45 minutes prior to Mass. No audition is required.

Folk Group

   This group welcomes guitarists, singers, and other instrumentalists who are interested in more contemporary settings of our community’s repertory. They are scheduled twice per month and alternate between the 5:45pm and 11:00am liturgies at Sacred Heart. They rehearse prior to Mass.

Instrumentalists

   Those who are gifted with the ability to play an instrument are always welcome. Instrumentalists are scheduled according to individual needs throughout the year and especially on major feast days. An audition with Derrick is required.

Schola

  The schola is made up of advanced singers and musicians, including music students and teachers from universities in the greater Louisville and Southern Indiana area. The goals of this group are to introduce advanced repertory to the community, to promote learning about sacred music, and to foster a relationship between young professional musicians and the church. The schola sings approximately one weekend per month during the school year. Members of the parish are welcome, but must have excellent music-reading skills, and an audition is required.

Music for Funerals

   Appropriate funeral music will be selected as the family of the deceased makes preparations with the Pastor. Click here for suggested repertory for Catholic funerals .

   We also welcome individuals who choose to plan ahead for their own funerals.

All of our liturgical ministries are vital to the life of the church, and they are suited to people with a wide variety of gifts. Training and resources are available. To sign up for one of these ministries, contact Derrick.

Liturgy Committee

   The Liturgy committe meets monthly to evaluate and discuss the quality of liturgy and plan for the liturgical seasons and special holy days.

Spiritual Life Commission

   The Spiritual Life Commission meets bi-monthly to evaluate and plan for the spiritual life of the church as a whole, including worship, Bible studies and small groups, and guest speakers.

Art & Environment Team

   The Art & Environment Team designs and coordinates seasonal décor for the church.

Sacristans

   Sacristans prepare the church and the altar for Mass, make sure that other liturgical ministers are present and able to fulfill their duties.

Cross Bearers

   Cross Bearers lead the procession at the beginning and end of Mass by carrying the Cross, the focal point of worship.

Eucharistic Ministers

   Eucharistic Ministers come forward after the sign of peace and distribute the bread and wine elements at communion.

Bread Bakers

   Bread Bakers follow a recipe and provide bread for weekend Masses.

Altar Servers          

   Altar Servers assist the presider throughout the liturgy. We welcome both adult and youth servers.  Altar Server Form

Lectors

   Lectors proclaim the first and second readings and the prayers of the faithful.

Ushers

   Ushers greet worshippers and assist with many aspects of liturgy, including the offertory collections and the flow of the communion line.
