The Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. Whether we are baptized as infants or adults, Baptism is the Church's way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God.
In Baptism we become members of the body of Christ, sisters and brothers of our Redeemer, and children of God. We are freed from sin, snatched from death and destined from thon for a life in the joy of the redeemed.
If you or someone you know is interested in being baptized or having their child baptized, we have two different routes to go about receiving the sacrament. If the person to be baptized is under the age of seven the person to contact is Deacon John Thompson. Deacon John will assist the parents (or guardians) in getting ready to make the commitment to raising the child in the Catholic faith and fully explain what it means to make the baptismal promises on behalf of the child.
If the person to be baptized is age seven or above the person to contact is our Director of Religious Education, Ann Northam. Ann will assist the person to be baptized in their formation as well as their understanding of the rights and responsibilities that come with becoming a new creation in Christ.
As a general rule people that are of the age of reason or older will be baptized at the Easter Vigil. Those children who are under the age of reason will as a general rule be baptized at 1 p.m. on the last Sunday of the month at either Saint Augustine or Sacred Heart. Baptisms will be performed at Saint Augustine in odd months and baptisms at Sacred Heart will be performed in even months.
Parishioners are invited to be baptized at either parish and the baptisms are open to the public. If the last Sunday of the month proves to be a hardship, please do not hesitate to discuss that with Deacon John or myself; the most important thing is that the child receive the sacrament!
